Facebook hacked, Java disabled

Facebook has been hacked and has disabled Java environment.

Facebook announced that it was hacked in its blog post after some of its employees visited an infected mobile developer website in January. It assures that user data hasn’t been compramised after its security breach.

“They gained limited visibility into our systems,” Fred Wolens, a spokesperson for Facebook, told in an interview, “We’ve accelerated our program to disable Java in our environment.”

“The company explained in the blog post that the laptops that were infected were “fully patched” and ran the most up-to-date antivirus software prior to the infection. It is currently working with law enforcement to dig into the hack’s details. The malware came through another issue with Java, the programming language that Oracle recently patched to fix a number of other issues. The Department of Homeland Security even recommended that people uninstall Java since hackers were finding new holes often.”

“After analyzing the compromised website where the attack originated, we found it was using a ‘zero-day,’ previously unseen exploit to bypass the Java sandbox (built-in protections) to install the malware,” said Facebook in the blog post. “We immediately reported the exploit to Oracle, and they confirmed our findings and provided a patch on February 1, 2013, that addresses this vulnerability.”

Facebook has not specified who the attackers are, and it very well may not know. The company does, however, say that it was “not alone in this attack” and that it wanted to tell the world about this hack quickly so that others can start their own remediation.

Yet another movie like ‘The social network’

Fox released the trailer for its comedy The Internship Movie following two “salesmen whose careers have been topped by the digital world. Played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, the two set off to Silicon Valley to prove that they are still relevant by landing internships at Google. ”

It goes to show how mainstream Silicon Valley is becoming. It started with The Social Network, which took brought Mark Zuckerberg’s creation of Facebook straight into the heart of Hollywood. Now, we’ve got a focus on Google and its famed working culture of slides, great food, nap rooms, and more.

The trailer shows scenes from Google’s “campus,” including a clear dry-erase wall (that Vaughn writes on with Sharpie), a self-driving car, a Rubik’s cube competition, and a bunch of smart twentysomethings who have it out for the two “old guys.”

It’s a tale of old-timey institutions being overrun by the newer, younger, digital revolution. At one point, those crazy Google youngsters send Vaughn and Wilson off on an adventure to find “Charles Xavier,” a Stanford professor who is balding and in a wheelchair. It doesn’t end well for the pair.

Facebook: Data block for Replication

After cutting off data access for Wonder, a social search app from Russian search engine Yandex, Facebook explained today that if you’re building an app that “replicates” its “core functionality,” its data is not for granted

“For … apps that are using Facebook to either replicate our functionality or bootstrap their growth in a way that creates little value for people on Facebook, such as not providing users an easy way to share back to Facebook, we’ve had policies against this that we are further clarifying today,” wrote Justin Osofsky, Facebook’s director of platform partnerships and operations, in a blog post.

The company’s new Platform Policy section 1.10 now reads:
“Reciprocity and Replicating core functionality: (a) Reciprocity: Facebook Platform enables developers to build personalized, social experiences via the Graph API and related APIs. If you use any Facebook APIs to build personalized or social experiences, you must also enable people to easily share their experiences back with people on Facebook. (b) Replicating core functionality: You may not use Facebook Platform to promote, or to export user data to, a product or service that replicates a core Facebook product or service without our permission.”

Tug of War between Facebook and Vine [Twitter]

Vine users who attempted to find Facebook friends on Friday received an error message stating that Twitter's new mobile app is not authorized to make the request. This is the latest apparent rift between the two social media rivals.

Earlier this week, Twitter launched Vine, a free iOS app that allows iPhone and iPad users to create and post very short videos. Twitter hinted that an Android version could be in the works.

Twitter, which is primarily known for its 140-characters tweets, has supported embedded YouTube videos since 2008, but its launch of Vine marks the first time it will host video content directly. As with tweets, the videos will need to be short -- a mere 6 seconds.

"Six seconds is too short for anything truly substantive," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Research, "but there's more information that can be conveyed by video, even in that short time frame, vs. a still photograph."

Tug of war between Facebook and Yandex

“Facebook shuts down data access for Yandex’s social search app”

Facebook is giving no data love to Yandex, a Russian search engine that launched a social search iOS app today called Wonder. While Wonder lets you ask natural-language queries in a method similar to Facebook’s own Graph Search, the company said the app is not, in fact, a search engine but rather a personal assistant.

The app launched yesterday morning, and it only lasted three hours before Facebook pulled access to its data. The app lets you search across Instagram, Foursquare, Twitter, and earlier in the day, Facebook. You can ask questions like “What are sushi places my friends like?” and it will provide you with a list of restaurants approved by your buddies. The company warned that it was purely experimental and that you’d only be able to ask it questions about places, music, and news at this point.

But Facebook recently released it own search called Graph Search, which does exactly this, only it pulls exclusively from Facebook’s data.

[Security breached] Facebook’s graph search a review

“Facebook has been greeted for its new feature ‘Graph Search’ for a few days ooops lets see some privacy issues on it –wait for it”

Graph Search is a feature Facebook introduced to allow users to enter parameter-based searches to find friends -- and friends of friends -- who share certain interests. A search for "friends who ski" or even more specifically "friends who ski in Arizona" will narrow the results within that field.

Concerns arose when Facebook changed its privacy policy to make way for Graph Search. The new policy made it impossible for users to hide their entire timelines from search results, although individual posts can be hidden one at a time by choosing the most restrictive privacy setting for that item.

Even CEO Mark Zuckerberg's sister, Randi Zuckerberg, was caught unawares by the new privacy settings. When a photo she posted -- which was intended to be private -- became public, she raised a stink and got it removed.

Those users who previously had opted out of having their timelines appear in search results then were forced to change the privacy settings for each post if they wanted it to remain out of sight.

Fact for the day: 17-07-2012

In February 2009. Twitter had a monthly growth (of users) of over 1300 % - several times more than Facebook.

The inspirationt for the brand name Yahoo! Came from a word made up by Jonathan Swift in his book Gulliver's Travels. A Yahoo was a person who was ugly and not human in appearance.

The first ever search engine was called "Archie" and was created way back in 1990 by a Canadian student Alan Emtage.

In 1999, new fiber was being installed at a rate of 2800 miles or 4500 kilometers per hour !

Tom Vendetta is the youngest Google employee ever hired. He was hired by Google when he was just 15 years old. Vendetta used to fool his friends by sending fake press releases and news. Vendetta was employed because he was young and would know how young hackers thought. His job was to help address security flaws in Gmail.

More than a billion transistors are manufactured.....every second!!!!!!!!

Heard of Mentaplex? It was an April fools joke that Google could read peoples minds and search the Internet for what they were thinking of.

Facebook blames bug for writing over contact e- mail addresses

Facebook said a bug can reset your contacts' e-mail addresses to its new and largely unwelcome @facebook.com mailbox -- overwriting the original address info in the process.

fb_logo

A Facebook official said the social network did intend to give its new @facebook.com e-mail addresses exclusive visibility on user profiles, but insists that a software bug is responsible for resetting your contacts' e-mail addresses the same way.

The social network's faux paux that outraged Facebook users and prompted misdirected e-mails throughout the Web was actually caused by a bug, FB said.

On certain devices, the bug was syncing the last e-mail linked to the account instead of the primary address set by a user, Facebook engineering director Andrew Bosworth told the Verge. This meant phones were pulling down @facebook.com addresses, unknown to their users -- resulting in messages sent to the wrong, and often unchecked, inboxes.

A Facebook spokesperson told us that most devices did not have the issue, but the company is still working on fixing the issue for some devices.

"We are in the process of fixing this issue and it will be resolved soon," the spokesperson said in an e-mail. "After that, those specific devices should pull the correct addresses."

Until then, users can still adjust their privacy settings to get their show their primary e-mail address and not their Facebook one.

The company intended to give users more control over their messages through the new e-mail system, according to the spokesperson.

In account settings, people can specify whether they want to receive messages from Friends, Friend of Friends, or Everyone. If someone sends an e-mail to your @facebook.com address and it's from an address associated with a Facebook friend or friend of friend's accounts, it will go into the inbox. If it's from an address not associated with a friend or friend of friend's Facebook account, it will go into your other folder. If you've specified in privacy settings that you only want to receive messages from friends or friend of friends, then the message will bounce.

"We've noticed that in a very limited number of cases, the bounce e-mail back to the original sender may not be delivered because it may get intercepted by spam filters," the spokesperson said. "We are working to make sure that e-mail senders consistently receive bounce messages."

Fact for the day: 30-06-2012

One million domain names are registered every month!!!

In a recent survey conducted by security specialist Symantec of the 100 most unsafe and malware infested web sites, 48 per cent of them feature adult content.

Bit torrents, depending on location, are estimated to consume 27 to 55 per cent of all internet bandwidth as of February 2009.

Domain registration was free until the National Science Foundation decided to change this on September 14th, 1995.

Employees at Google are encouraged to use 20 percent of their time working on their own projects. Google News, Orkut are both examples of projects that grew from this working model.

Someone is a victim of a cybercrime every 10 seconds, and it is on the rise.

The first software to be imported from Soviet Union to the US was Tetris, developed by Alexey Pazhitov in 1985.

Fact for the day: 27-06-2012

Every minute 35 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube.

35 hours of video every minute. 2100 hours of video every hour. 50400 hours of video every day.

Total number of Instant Messaging users by 2010 is 2.4 billion !

That includes all the instant messaging tools usage, like Google Talk, Yahoo messenger, Skype etc.

Total number of Twitter users by 2010 = 175 million !

Which means 175 million people are involved in random talk and tweeting in 140 characters. Now, who’s denying ?

250 million New people registered on Facebook in 2010

Imagine, if every year, 250 million people added up ?

70% of Facebook’s user base is outside the U.S

Facebook has become truly a global phenomenon now. Isn’t it ?

By 2010, there are more than 5 Billion mobile connections in the world !

Mobile applications, anyone ?

The average number of videos an Internet user in U.S watches on the internet = 186

This is pretty much close to the rest of the world, but what’s more interesting is that the source is Facebook and YouTube.

The average number of photos uploaded on Facebook per year = 36 billion.

That’s very less compared to Flickr, but its interesting to see Facebook eating up to other specialized social media channels like YouTube and Flickr with its content.

Number of new users on Twitter in 2010 = 100 Million

Clearly, after Facebook, Twitter is the most fast growing website on the internet today.

The most popular browser on the internet today is Internet Explorer, despite fierce competition from Firefox and Chrome.

Another true fact: we cannot download other browser without IE.

Facebook study reveals what makes someone a leader

Every group of friends has its leaders and its followers, those who are able to influence their peers and those who can't resist. Now a study of over one million Facebook users reveals just who wields the most peer power, with men showing greater influence than women, while younger people are less influential than their older counterparts.

Knowing what makes someone influential could of course help advertisers spread their products through social media, but it can also be used more altruistically, such as promoting HIV testing in Africa. "Finding influential people is all the rage today," says Sinan Aral, who studies the spread of information at New York University. But he says that many companies who claim to measure influence online are not approaching it in a scientific way.

Aral and his colleague Dylan Walker, also at NYU, studied influence by watching how use of a film-rating app spread through Facebook users. Starting with a seed group of 7730 users, the researchers designed the app to randomly send messages to the app users' friends, encouraging them to also install the app. Just under 42,000 messages were sent out to a random selection of the initial groups' 1.3 million friends, resulting in nearly 1000 new app users.

This random selection of who gets the message allowed the researchers to avoid common pitfalls in measuring influence, such as homophily bias – the principle that we tend to make friends with people like ourselves. "If two friends adopt a product one after the other, current methods have a hard time distinguishing whether it is because of peer influence, or rather that the friends simply have similar preferences," explains Aral.

Who are the power brokers?

Analysing the results in combination with users' Facebook profile data revealed a number of insights into which people are the most influential. Men are 49 per cent more influential than women, but women are 12 per cent less susceptible to influence than men, and they exert 46 per cent more influence over men than over other women. Influence also increases with age, with people over 31 being 51 per cent better at convincing their friends than those under 18.

Relationship status also plays a role. Single individuals are 113 per cent more influential than those in a relationship and 128 per cent more than those who define their relationship status as "it's complicated". On the flip side, susceptibility rises with increasing relationship commitment – up until you get married.

Aral says that statistics cannot explain why these effects occur, but one possible reason is that those in more serious relationships have greater obligation to respond to requests from their partner's family, with social pressure easing once you get married. "It may be more difficult to reject a request from one's future father-in-law just before the wedding," he says. "After the marriage, all bets are off."

"This is probably the first experimental contribution to the long-standing question of influence and susceptibility," says Manuel Cebrian who studies social networks at the University of California, San Diego. He adds that Aral and Walker's findings are much more significant than previous attempts to measure influence because of their statistical validity.

Facebook Unveils App Discovery Platform: The App Center

Facebook has announced the App Center, a new place for people to find social apps. The App Center gives developers an additional way to grow their apps and creates opportunities for more types of apps to be successful.

For the over 900 million people that use Facebook, the App Center will become the new, central place to find great apps like Draw Something, Pinterest, Spotify, Battle Pirates, Viddy, and Bubble Witch Saga.

Everything has an app detail page, which helps people see what makes an app unique and lets them install it before going to an app.

The App Center will go live on Facebook and in Facebook’s iOS and Android apps in a few weeks. Meanwhile, developers are encouraged to update their apps before the launch to ensure they can participate.
