Tug of War between Facebook and Vine [Twitter]

Vine users who attempted to find Facebook friends on Friday received an error message stating that Twitter's new mobile app is not authorized to make the request. This is the latest apparent rift between the two social media rivals.

Earlier this week, Twitter launched Vine, a free iOS app that allows iPhone and iPad users to create and post very short videos. Twitter hinted that an Android version could be in the works.

Twitter, which is primarily known for its 140-characters tweets, has supported embedded YouTube videos since 2008, but its launch of Vine marks the first time it will host video content directly. As with tweets, the videos will need to be short -- a mere 6 seconds.

"Six seconds is too short for anything truly substantive," said Greg Sterling, principal analyst at Sterling Market Research, "but there's more information that can be conveyed by video, even in that short time frame, vs. a still photograph."

Tug of war between Facebook and Yandex

Facebook shuts down data access for Yandex’s social search app

Facebook is giving no data love to Yandex, a Russian search engine that launched a social search iOS app today called Wonder. While Wonder lets you ask natural-language queries in a method similar to Facebook’s own Graph Search, the company said the app is not, in fact, a search engine but rather a personal assistant.

The app launched yesterday morning, and it only lasted three hours before Facebook pulled access to its data. The app lets you search across Instagram, Foursquare, Twitter, and earlier in the day, Facebook. You can ask questions like “What are sushi places my friends like?” and it will provide you with a list of restaurants approved by your buddies. The company warned that it was purely experimental and that you’d only be able to ask it questions about places, music, and news at this point.

But Facebook recently released it own search called Graph Search, which does exactly this, only it pulls exclusively from Facebook’s data.

Fact for the day: 17-07-2012

In February 2009. Twitter had a monthly growth (of users) of over 1300 % - several times more than Facebook.

The inspirationt for the brand name Yahoo! Came from a word made up by Jonathan Swift in his book Gulliver's Travels. A Yahoo was a person who was ugly and not human in appearance.

The first ever search engine was called "Archie" and was created way back in 1990 by a Canadian student Alan Emtage.

In 1999, new fiber was being installed at a rate of 2800 miles or 4500 kilometers per hour !

Tom Vendetta is the youngest Google employee ever hired. He was hired by Google when he was just 15 years old. Vendetta used to fool his friends by sending fake press releases and news. Vendetta was employed because he was young and would know how young hackers thought. His job was to help address security flaws in Gmail.

More than a billion transistors are manufactured.....every second!!!!!!!!

Heard of Mentaplex? It was an April fools joke that Google could read peoples minds and search the Internet for what they were thinking of.

Xbox Live down; Microsoft at work on a fix

Company says on its Xbox Live Status page that users are not able to sign in to Xbox Live from an Xbox console or from Xbox.com.

Xbox Live users are unable to access the online-gaming service, Microsoft has confirmed.

The software company has taken to both its Twitter account and its Service Status page to inform users that Xbox Live is experiencing "difficulties." The Xbox Live Status pagespecifically says that users are currently unable to sign in to Xbox Live from their Xbox 360 or via Xbox.com.

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue," Microsoft wrote on the Status page. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

Although Microsoft hasn't said when Xbox Live went down, it appears, based on the complaints on Twitter, that it happened a little over an hour ago. The company's Xbox Live Twitter account also started responding to those complaints around the same time.

We will update this story when we have more information.

Twitter set to unveil revamped search and discovery features

Popular social network Twitter will unveil significant changes to search and discovery as soon as today, according to a tweetby engineering manager Pankaj Gupta.

“Search & discovery in @twitter set to change forever after tomorrow,” Gupta wrote on Twitter on Thursday evening. “Team — congrats and enjoy the enormity of your impact few understand today!”

Search and discovery are incredibly important features for the network, and many times a search on Twitter is more valuable than a Google search because you can see real-time responses to things that are happening now. Discovery is important too, and with a well-implemented design, discovery can make you want to spend more time browsing a network.

Gupta’s tweet suggests that the changes will take place either today or tomorrow, but we’d be more likely to bet on today because more people will be around to write about the changes.

We’ve contacted Twitter for more information about the changes and will update this post if the company gets back to us.

Twitter Turns off 'tweet' Tap to LinkedIn

Twitter messages will go down a one-way street on LinkedIn after Twitter shuts off its flow of data to the professional networking site on Friday.

LinkedIn users can still opt to share their status updates written on its website with Twitter, but not the other way around. In an email to users, LinkedIn said Twitter had "evolved its strategy."

"We know that sharing updates from LinkedIn to Twitter is a valuable service for our members," according to the notice. "Moving forward, you will still be able to share updates with your Twitter audience by posting them on LinkedIn."

LinkedIn users can push their content to Twitter by checking a box with Twitter's icon and clicking "share."

The two companies had worked together since 2009. Twitter was oblique about the changes and didn't mention LinkedIn, writing that it did not want developers to mimic its application.

Michael Sippey, a Twitter group product manager, wroteon Friday that the company is developing a platform that would allow applications to run within Twitter messages.

Also under development are features that allow developers to more deeply integrate Twitter into their sites, including "follow" and "tweet" buttons, embeddable tweets and a search widget, he wrote.

"These efforts highlight the increasing importance of us providing the core Twitter consumption experience through a consistent set of products and tools," Sippey wrote.
