Cheaper iPhone is iPod, Tim Cook

Tim Cook is pretty happy with Apple’s first quarter numbers for 2013, saying that “no technology company has ever reported results like these.” And with record quarterly revenue of $54.5 billion and record quarterly profit of $13.1 billion, you can understand why.

But yesterday is less interesting to investors than tomorrow, which is why Apple’s stock price is down, and one of the analysts on the call asked the Apple chief exec about market share and cheaper iPhones. That’s been a big concern lately, as most of the growth in mobile phones is in markets like Asia and Africa, which are much more price-sensitive than the U.S. or Europe.

“The most important thing for Apple is to make products that impact people’s lives,” Cook answered. “We don’t seek revenue for revenue’s sake.”

Those would not have been comforting words to investors who are looking for Apple to expand its market share by offering products that appear to a wider range of customers. But Cook did offer a ray of hope.

“We’ve had a great track record on iPod of offering different products at different price points,” Cook added.

That might be a hint that Apple will offer iPhones at differing price points, beyond the current strategy of offering old models at reduced rates. The iPod, of course, is available in the top-of-the-line iPod Touch, the still-existing Classic, and the cheap Nano and cheaper Shuffle.

But don’t hope for too much. Then Cook added, for emphasis:

“But our top priority is making a great product that enriches people’s lives.”

Santa gets technical: Over 17M iOS and Android devices activated Christmas Day

Christmas Day marked the most iOS and Android device activations than “any other day in history,” according to a report from mobile analytics company Flurry – with over 17 million new smartphones and tablets booting up for the first time.

Compared to the rest of December, new iOS and Android activations soared 332 percent on Christmas Day. Every other day in December only averaged around four million activated devices. It also squarely beat out last Christmas, which only hit 6.8 million devices activated.

Smartphones and tablets are undeniably mainstream and parents, friends, and significant others are seemingly happy to shell out for the technology everyone wants. It helps that a number of new products entered the market in the recent months, including Apple’s iPad Mini, iPhone 5, Kindle Fire HD, Nexus 4, and Nexus 10. The hype and marketing from these releases surely contributed to people’s holiday wish lists.

Interestingly, however, it seems like people think of tablets as a present, as opposed to an every day expense. Throughout December, 80 percent of activated iOS and Android devices were smartphones, whereas on Christmas Day, tablets rushed up and claimed 51 percent of activated devices.

Apps also saw an expected spike on what has now come to be known as Download Day. Compared with the rest of December, app downloads increased by 112 percent on Christmas Day with 328 million apps downloaded overall. Only 155 million apps were downloaded each day in December prior to Christmas.

iPhone 5 will launch with 19-pin Dock connector

The company's current iPhones has a 30-pin port. The smaller connector will make room for the headphone jack on the bottom of the device.

Apple's next iPhonewill come with a smaller Dock connector port, according to a new report.

Although Apple's current mobile devices, including the iPhone and iPad, come with a 30-pin port, the new iPhone will sport a 19-pin connector, Reuters is reporting today, citing sources. The switch will help Apple make room on the bottom of the handset for a headphone jack. The headphone jack currently sits at the top of Apple's iPhones.

Reuters' report on Apple's Dock connector is just the latest in a string of rumors surrounding Apple's plans for that port. Over the last few months, an increasing number of reports have cropped up, saying that Apple will be ditching the 30-pin connector for a smaller, 19-pin option.

Back in May, for example, Apple site iLounge reported, citing sources, that the new connector is "closer to a pill shape." In addition, the site said that the connector will be available on all future mobile devices Apple launches.

For its part, Apple hasn't commented on its plans for a new Dock connector, but blowfish12 has contacted the company for comment on the Reuters report and will update this story when we have more information.

If Apple does, in fact, decide to launch a new Dock connector in the iPhone 5, its latest handset would, out of the box, seemingly be incompatible with the many accessories that connect to its devices with a 30-pin connector. Whether Apple will offer up an adapter to ensure legacy products still work with its products remains to be seen.

Hotel replacing guest phones with iPhones

Vancouver hotel hopes guests will appreciate making calls with no roaming fees on hotel-provided iPhones instead of those things called landlines.

iphone4s_270x190

There's about to be a whole lot more Angry Birds played at the Opus hotel in Vancouver.

The hotel is in the process of swapping out its hotel room phones for iPhones, USA Today reportedtoday.

The hotel hopes that its guests, particularly the ones from the U.S., will know how to use them and enjoy using a Canadian phone that won't stick them with international roaming fees. This means guests will be able to take the iPhone from their rooms and use it as they would their own while they're guests of the hotel.

It will come preloaded with the numbers of the hotel's various departments and when the guest checks out, the iPhone's memory will be wiped clean.

Apparently, this isn't the first time the hotel has embraced mobile technology. In March, the Opus became the first hotel in Canada to offer an iPad 2 -- complete with an iPad Virtual Concierge -- in every room.

This comes after news of another hotel -- the U.K.'s Hotel Indigo -- replacing its complimentary Bibles with Kindles preloaded with the e-version of the Good Book. What other tech gadgets should hotels embrace?

Apple snags patent for water-damage detection

Company's patent describes a detector that gives customer service representatives an easy way to determine how badly damaged a product is due to water.

Apple_water_detection

Apple has won a patent related to detecting water damage in a gadget.

The patent, 8,210,032, describes a method by which customer service representatives can quickly determine if a product has been damaged by water. In order for the invention to work, Apple says that a detector would be placed inside an enclosed device and provide "at least one visual indication after being immersed in water." The detector, Apple says, is strategically placed within the enclosed device so users can determine water damage from the outside.

Apple filed for the patent in January 2010. However, the company has been including its Liquid Contact Indicator in products for years, dating back to the original iPhone. Upon being immersed in water, the indicator turns red, giving Apple employees conclusive evidence that it was wet.

For Apple, having that indicator readily accessible is extremely important. The company's iPhone warranty does not cover water damage. So, if customers come in with what they claim is a broken iPhone that was actually tossed into a lake, Apple might be forced to pay for the replacement if it didn't know the device had gotten wet.

"Water exposure is among major reasons that may cause significant malfunction of devices, such as electronic devices, which include electronic, mechanical, or chemical components," Apple writes in its patent. "Therefore, verification of significant water exposure (or water immersion) is important to manufacturers of the devices. For example, for purposes such as warranty claim assessment, trouble-shooting for repairs, and product development, a manufacturer of electronic devices typically needs to verify whether a malfunctioning device has been immersed in water."

AppleInsider found today that Apple has also filed for a patent for a wireless iPhone headset that would communicate with the device via Bluetooth. Because Bluetooth-based headsets can often lose their charge quite quickly, Apple's patent also describes a method for accessing battery power by plugging it into the handset.

Apple refreshes iCloud beta with new Web apps

Web versions of the iOS Notes and Reminders apps have been spotted in the latest beta build for Apple's iCloud.

Apple has apparently cooked up Web-based versions of its Notes and Reminders apps, as seen in the latest iCloud beta.

Accessible via iCloud from a PC or Mac, the new apps seem similar to their mobile iOS and Mountain Lion counterparts, according to a review by 9to5Mac.

The Web-based Notes app lets you enter and organize notes and then e-mail them using the iCloud e-mail. The Reminders app allows you to add reminders, attach notes to them, and schedule the date and time for you to be alerted.

Other online surprises are in store for iCloud users.

The latest beta includes a new Find my iPhone app that taps into the Lost Mode feature. New to iOS 6, Lost Mode lets you send a phone number to your lost iPhone where hopefully an honest citizen can find it and call you back.

The Web-version of Find my iPhone also displays a battery status icon, according to MacRumors, providing a countdown on how much juice your iPhone has left until it conks out.

Currently available only for registered developers, the new iCloud Web apps could pop up when iOS 6 debuts early this fall.

Google Now assistant knows what you need, right now

Yesterday's Google I/O event saw the company make a big push into hardware with the announcement of a new tablet, media player and a sky-diving demonstration of its augmented reality glasses, but the search giant also leveraged its software chops and massive piles of user data to cook up a rival to Apple's Siri: Google Now.

While the iPhone's personal assistant is designed to listen to and answer your queries, Google Now supposedly knows what you want before you even ask. Coming as part of the latest Android 4.1 update, it uses everything Google knows about you to provide relevant information at all times - a vision that Google engineers first outlined in 2010.

For example, if you've got an appointment entered into Google Calendar, Now will use your transport preferences in combination with your current location and local traffic conditions to let you know when to leave so you arrive on time. Or, if you are scheduled to take a flight that has since been delayed, Google Now will tell you there is enough time for your regular lunchtime gym workout.

Of course, for Google Now to work you have to be prepared to hand over your entire life to Google's services, but many Android users have already done so. Google also says that users will be able to opt-in to the level of personalization they prefer, meaning it should be possible to avoid any embarrassing notifications based on your late-night web searches.

Android Phone Vs Apple iPhone

There are many new phones available in market but Android and Apple iPhone has taken over the mobile market. They just are going on updating their technology and presenting in the market. In this race of mobiles, people get confused and bring home a useless phone which is not the right phone to show off. Don’t go with the looks and luster of the phone. It is my very most request to the entire dude’s out there that go deep into the technology and compare the gadget with their performance. iPhone has entered the market with a banging versatility 3 years ago but Google Android OS hit next after iPhone. Both were okay with their sales but you get confused which one to buy. So below are certain points where you will get 100% cleared to go with whom- ‘Android or Apple’.

android vs iphone

Follow these points before you buy a phone for yourself. I must say Android would be best for you.

Advantage of buying Android are-

  1. You will get wide range of Android phones in the market such as Samsung Galaxy, Sony Ericsson, HTC etc. but iPhone is one of a kind, you won’t get another brand.
  2. With wide range of Android phones you get every range in price too but iPhone will cost you the same price.
  3. Removing battery from Android phone is a simple job but this can’t happen in Apple iPhones. You can’t take it off.
  4. The favorite part is that you love to install applications on your phone (if not might have seen anywhere else) and Android provides you more than 1,00,000 applications but Apple approves its own application on iPhone and are very few that you might not like it.
  5. Android phones have flash player support but not in iPhone.
  6. GPS is not free in iPhones but most of the Android phones have free GPS.
  7. You can download free music from Android but iPhone doesn’t allow you because you have to pay few dollars to make music library full. Yes, you don’t get refund for paid apps in iTunes.
  8. Android doesn’t need software to sync with your computer but iPhone needs iTunes to manage all your data through computer.
  9. Taking pictures through Android camera have a hell n haven difference that with iPhone. Oh yes you don’t get flash in iPhone.
  10. OMG!! No Bluetooth transfer through iPhone.
  11. iPhone 4 has hideous antenna problem but you won’t find trouble in Android antennas.
  12. Customization through Android phones is easy. You can customize your wallpapers, background according to your wish but you can do this in iPhones and even there is no ring back tone.
  13. If in any means you lost or destroyed your Android USB then you can use the standard one to get work done but in Apple you have to have its own USB.

This was my opinion about two OS’s, now you have a better option which to buy. Go and chose any of the Android phones sold in market. Choose from HTC, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Dell, Motorola, Acer, Olive, LG, Spice, Videocon, Micromax etc.

5 Reasons Where Android Wins Over iPhone

I have gone through Android phones as well as iPhone from where I came into conclusion that Android wins the battle against iPhone. I’ve described few points that might be little controversial. Nevertheless, I want to enlighten rather than unspoken to itemize. So now, let’s talk about various points that will illustrate the wining tale of Android over iPhone.

5-reasons where android wins over iPhone

  1. Application Options– In the Android platform, even if the application is still running programs, you can just press the “Menu” button to enter the application options, and the PC applications operate exactly the same. On the other hand, using the iPhone, you have to first pass the “Settings” option to enter the application. When the iPhone application within the application designer to add the “Options” button, occasionally you can skip this step, which in turn can direct to non-uniform, because not all applications have options.

  2. Devoid of iTunes- As we all knew without iTunes the iPhone can’t be synchronized with PC. This is the biggest fault of iPhone. Apple force you to install the software to fully manage your iPhone. Where in Android platform you can manage applications without any sync software. In fact, one of the Android device can be used by multiple applications on multiple platforms and management.

  3. Update- Update in iPhone is a flaw because to complete the update particularly in the firmware update , iPhone must hook up iTunes. Were as Android provides two update methods. One is OTA wireless download and other by installing the phone via PC using third-party software updates. Most of the software are very easy to use in Android. Here in Android OTA update is perfect. When informed of updates have been released, while the phone is still not displayed, it makes you disappointment. But usually talking, vendors release updated, your phone will display updated and ready to install.

  4. Application Installation- In Android you can download an app by coping the simple qr code or even install the app from Bluetooth. From Android Market you can download from wide-range of apps , more than 30,000 apps. All most all are official apps and are simple to use. Developers create apps for you but few people argue that these apps can open doors to malicious softwares in Android. You can operate it properly to avoid this mishap.

  5. Multitasking- Of course Android platform can actually carry out multiple tasks. Yes, Apple avers iPhone can do, but according to users the iPhone platform can be challenged for the actual operation. In Android phones you need to do is press the “Home” button, the list will show the running application. In the list, you can liberally switch between applications and you can even install third-party Android application such as Power Strip for the execution of extra powerful multi-tasking.

There were a lot of grounds I think Android is superior than iphone, but these five are the most significant. Without a doubt, iPhones in many ways are fairly good, but for those with more liberty to have the benefit of the gear to bring a sense of real people and Android is indubitably a good pick.

Mindstorm NXT Robot

As android is rapidly sacking many users and yes its happening because of its flexibility and open source too. No doubt that in future many other gadgets are gonna run on Android and hoping to see an artificial intelligence built android robot helping me out in my home. Do you remember Lego toys? These childhood devices are now with android curb via Bluetooth. Have you seen this anywhere? Then see the video below.
