Fact for the day: 16-07-2012

In 1988 Electronic Arts became the first major publisher to release an 'online' multiplayer game. Dan Bunten's Modem Wars allowed two players to sit at their own computer and play over a telephone line.

While games such as Doom, Marathon, Quake, Duke Nukem 3D and GoldenEye 007 may have defined the first-person shooter genre, the first documented 'first person shooter 3D multiplayer networked game' was called Spasim (space + simulation = Spasim). It appeared in 1974 and could be played by up to 32 people.

It is believed that Subash Ghai's film Taal was the first Bollywood movie to be widely promoted on the internet.

The first internet worm was created by Robert Morris, Jr, and attacked more than 6,000 internet hosts.

Liquipel raises around $10M for “nano coat” technology that waterproofs devices

Liquipel, a company that produces waterproof “Nano coating” for phones and other electronic devices has raised around $10 million in its first round of funding.

The technology is applied to electronic devices and protects the hardware against water. While it won’t save a phone from full-on submersion, the protective layer which is invisible to the naked eye, can keep rain, spills, and short-term soaks from making major damage. It is compatible with a number of Apple, Motorola, Samsung, and HTC products.

This is Liquipel’s first SEC filing, with the investment being listed as equity. No other information has been disclosed. The company’s Form D has an amendment that states “Estimation of valuation among the parties of contracts and other assets exceeds $10,000,000.” Whatever that means.

On April 26, Liquipel won a Silver Award for Enhanced Functionality in the Material Science category at the 2012 Edison Awards, an innovation competition held in New York City. It also made a splash (pun intended) at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and earlier this year, it announced at the Mobile World Congressin Barcelona that it had struck a licensing agreement with Australia’s Vita Group, expanded operations to Brazil and China, and added six new board members.

The company is based in Santa Ana, California and was founded in 2011. It faces competition from companies like HzO and NeverWet, which also showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show, where waterproofing gadget technology was a major theme.

Gustav Klimt: The early years

gustav_klimt_annerl

Gustav Klimt was an Austrian painter, who was born July 14, 1862 in Baumgarten, near Vienna in, what was then, Austria-Hungary. He was the second of seven children - three boys and four girls. (See:Gustav Klimt's 150th birth anniversary marked by Google doodle) only on 14th july 2012
His father, Ernst Klimt the Elder was a gold engraver. Ernst married Anna Klimt, whose unrealised ambition was to be a musical performer. Klimt's childhood was spent in poverty, though he went on to study architectural painting at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule) until 1883.
Gustav Klimt's early inspiration was Hans Makart, the foremost history painter of the time. Hans Makart went to have a major influence on the careers of Gustav Klimt and other Austrian artists of the time. Makart was a revered artist himself, and a very well known celebrity figure in the high culture circles of Vienna.
Meanwhile, in 1877, Gustav Klimt's brother Ernst joined him at the Vienna School of Arts, and the two brothers, and their friend Franz Matsch, began working together. They called themselves "Company of Artists", and became rather popular, receiving multiple commissions. Along with their teacher, they painted various murals in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
Gustav Klimt began his solo professional career painting interior murals and ceilings in large public buildings on the Ringstraße including a successful series of "Allegories and Emblems".
In 1888, at age 26, Gustav Klimt received the Golden order of Merit from Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria for his work at the Burgtheater in Vienna. He also became an honorary member of the University of Munich and the University of Vienna.
In 1892, tragedy stuck. Klimt's father and brother Ernst both died, and he had to assume financial responsibility for both the families. That wasn't the only impact on Gustav Klimt's life. The deaths affected his artistic vision as well, giving his work a more personal style.
While Gustav Klimt had multiple relationships during his life, he never married. Perhaps his "special one" was an Austrian designer, fashion designer and businesswoman by the name of Emilie Louise Flöge, though the exact nature of their relationship is debated till date.
